To start with, we had a thrilling adventure just on the ride up to Teide. The driver of our van was originally from Germany, and he must have still thought he was on the Autobahn. We made record time flying up to the volcano as he swerved in and out of lanes passing other tour vans along the way. He would say, “Oh, that was my buddy. He drives too slow”.
When we made it safely up, we were astonished by beautiful surroundings – and the cold. It was freezing, but it was incredible. Mount Teide is an active volcano that has clearly made its influence on the landscape. With the star-filled sky, surrounding igneous rock, and thin, cold air, it felt like we were on another planet. I have never seen so many stars in my entire life. We were even able to see two of the “nearby” galaxies with the high-powered telescopes. It was truly a remarkable, humbling experience.
We went with Travel Tenerife on their Teide By Night tour.
